About this work

Triptych with an allegory on the education of the arts. On the central panel, a nursery; a woman is breastfeeding a child. She is seated at a table, with a cradle and a basket on the floor before her. A chandelier hangs from the ceiling, and on the wall is the mounted head of a stag. In the background, a dentist. The nursery symbolizes nature. The left wing shows an evening school where writing is taught by the light of candles and a lantern. The school symbolizes education. On the right wing, a scholar cuts a quill in his study by candlelight. The quill-cutter symbolizes practice. (for the left and right wings, see SK-A-2320-B/C)
