About this work
We know of no paintings by Rembrandt with domestic scenes. His pupil Nicolaes Maes, on the other hand, painted many virtuous women busy at home. Here an old woman spins wool. She has withdrawn into the corner of a room where the last remnant of daylight falls. Maes adopted this method of lighting from his master.
