About this work
Women are busy doing laundry near a French village church. One of them spreads the linen on the bleaching field, while another fetches water from the pump. Maris divided the space into three areas by placing a fence between the women and an autumnal-brown hedge before the church. The saplings' delicate branches reinforce the horizontal lines of the composition.
