About this work

Even though you might think this looks like a real place, it is not. Karsen was a master of imaginary townscapes, a genre in the Romantic era that was particularly popular around 1850. He travelled to Germany and Prague, and the sights along the way provided enough working material for the remainder of his life. This painting was given to the museum by his son Eduard, who was also a famous painter.
