About this work

Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, 1517-1586, councilor to Governor Margaret of Parma, 1559-1564. Probably an old copy after a lost original by Willem Key. Dated 1565. Granvelle was appointed Bishop of Arras in 1538; in 1550 he took over the diplomatic functions in the service of the Habsburg court from his father. He was the main advisor to the Governor, and since 1561, as Cardinal-Archbishop of Mechelen, also the most influential ecclesiastical authority.
