About this work
The shadow of his grandmother towers over the peacefully sleeping child Jesus. His mother reads calmly a book. The intimate domestic scene is illuminated by only a single light source.<BR />This theme was frequently depicted in Rembrandt's workshop in the 1640s. The strong light-dark contrast is typical of the master. However, this painting is not by his hand. It was probably painted by one of his pupils.
