About this work
Prince Maurice died on 23 April 1625 at the age of 57. Rumour had it that he was poisoned. However, an autopsy proved that his death was due to an abscess on his liver. Shortly afterwards, he was embalmed and laid in state, dressed in a fur-lined tabard, as seen in this small portrait.
