About this work
By copying a classical bust, a woman is refining her drawing skills. The room’s decor is inspired by classical antiquity and the woman’s attire, too, is reminiscent of a Greek or Roman robe. Accompanying this painting is The Music Lesson, also shown here. Both works highlight the importance placed on art education for affluent women in the 19th century.
