About this work

Maria van Strijp was a member of a wealthy Haarlem family active in the flourishing textile trade. Her jewellery and black dress sumptuously trimmed with lace are far more valuable than this painting of her. The decision to commission Verspronck for her portrait was easily made: he was the specialist in capturing luxurious fabrics and jewels.
