About this work
Portrait of presumably Elsje van Houweningen (?-1681), half-length, standing next to a table with a book on it, a small book open in her right hand. As a maid to Maria van Reigersberch and Hugo de Groot, she played an important role in De Groot's escape from Loevestein in 1621. In 1625 she married De Groot's former servant, Willem Cornelisz. van Velden (see pendant, SK-A-583), who was sworn in as a notary that same year and appointed advocate in 1642.
