About this work
The city views of Jan van der Heyden were not always entirely naturalistic. On this painting he seems to have combined buildings from different cities. Thus the church is presumably the Sankt Severin in Cologne and the double gate resembles the Waterpoort of Emmerich. The triangular dam with the two small towers (right) was actually located in the defensive moat around Amsterdam.
