About this work

Caspar Commelin, historian, by David van der Plaes. Caspar Commelin (1636–1693) compiled a two-part history of the city of Amsterdam. Unusually, the city council gave him permission to consult the city archives. In his hand Commelin holds his 'Beschrijvinge van Amsterdam' which has fallen open at a page showing a print of the old town hall on Dam Square.
