About this work
Inscribed on the back of this painting are the words “From Bertha’s Window.” Bertha Hill was Carroll Beckwith’s wife, whom he married in 1887. (Franchi and Weber, Intimate Revelations: The Art of Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917), 1999) The couple moved to Rome in 1910 and also made a trip to Florence, where Beckwith painted this scene on the eleventh of October. Beckwith’s passion for color is evident in the effects of light on the building, the dabs of paint that define the stone wall, and the brilliant lavender and aquamarine sky.
