About this work

In this skillfully carved santo, St. John Nepomuk appears to be engaged in his role of confessor, with his lips slightly pursed as if in the act of blessing the penitent. After he was made a saint in 1729, his popularity spread throughout Europe and the New World, where his image appeared in a variety of forms.
