About this work

The depiction shows the meeting of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well at Sichar (John 4,1-26). The theme was apparently quite popular in Bonifacio's workshop. Dorothee Westphal (1931) lists four versions from Bonifacio's circle, though she does not consider the Basel example: 1. formerly in the Joseph Cremer collection in Dortmund (Dorothee Westphal: Bonifazio Veronese (Bonifazio dei Pitati), Munich 1931, p. 87, No. 14 and Fig. 65), 2.
