About this work
The portrait of the reformer Johannes Oekolampad (1482–1531), who headed the Reformed Church of Basel as Antistes from 1529 until his death, was created posthumously, as the beginning of the inscription clearly indicates (translated: "Radiant torch in the Lord's house, I once shone..."). It goes back to a portrait medal created in 1531 by the Zurich goldsmith Jakob Stampfer (see Ausst.-Kat. Zürich 1981, No. 222, fig. p.
