About this work
Thomas Erastus (1524–1583), a clear opponent of Paracelsus as a physician and a follower of Zwingli's Reformed direction as a theologian, had been a professor of medicine in Heidelberg since 1558 and personal physician to the Elector Palatine. In 1580 he came to Basel and was appointed professor of ethics there in the year of his death. Doubts are appropriate regarding the authorship of the portrait.
