Portrait of Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644)

Johannes Uytenbogaert, by M.J. van Miereveld, 1632. Johannes Uytenbogaert (1557-1644) played a major part in the ecclesiastical and political life of the young Republic. In the late 16th century he was appointed chaplain to the court of Prince Maurice. During the truce with Spain, however, the Stadholder and the minister found themselves on opposite sides. Uytenbogaert was one of the leaders of a critical movement within the Reformed Church - the Remonstrants - who came into conflict with Maurice and the more orthodox Calvinists. Uytenbogaert fell from grace and fled abroad. He eventually returned, after Maurice's death.
