About this work

In March 1587, a few months after their completion, Basilius Amerbach acquired the two allegorical representations of Day (Inv. 85) and Night (Inv. 86), conceived as pendants, directly from the artist. Their complex humanistic iconography suggests that they were commissioned works for Amerbach. The nude female figure personifying Day turns towards the viewer. Her foot closes an urn.
