About this work
The depicted scene can still be vaguely made out in fragments: at the upper edge of the fragment, an angel descends with a scroll over a small flock of sheep. Further down, a man with a water tub is visible, whom he likely filled at the fountain in the upper right. This is certainly Joseph rather than a shepherd. His lower body is obscured by a roof running over a rock grotto.
