About this work
A second, later version of this theme is in the Schack Collection of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Munich (Andree 1998, No. 121). As Angela Böcklin reports in her memoirs, the dry landscape of Palestrina near Rome, where Arnold Böcklin traveled with his wife on their honeymoon in 1853, inspired the artist to depict the motif (Böcklin Memoirs. Diary Leaves of Böcklin's Wife Angela, ed. Ferdinand Runkel, Berlin: Internationale Verlagsanstalt für Kunst und Literatur).
