About this work

The fresco transferred to canvas, together with Inv. 1903 and Inv. 1905, adorned the rear wall of a pavilion that Karl Sarasin-Sauvain (1815–86) had built in his garden between St. Alban-Vorstadt and St. Alban-Anlage in Basel. The commission for the wall paintings with motifs from the Old and New Testament was probably mediated by Böcklin's friend Jacob Burckhardt (exh. cat. Basel/Paris/Munich 2001, p. 206). According to Rudolf Schick, Böcklin began this fresco on September 4.
