About this work

Ferdinand Olivier was probably inspired by the Italian sketchbooks of his brother Friedrich Olivier for the ideal landscape of this late work (Krafft in Exhibition Catalogue Basel 1982, p. 177). The painting, also known in literature as "Great Ideal Landscape with Abbey" and said to have been called Olivier's masterpiece by his friend Peter Cornelius (Grote 1938/1999, p. 344), was publicly presented for the first time at the Munich Art Exhibition in 1838.
