About this work
On May 14, 1884, the commission of the Public Art Collection Basel commissioned Stückelberg to paint the large picture *The Earthquake in Basel*. Many studies were created (at least five are documented in Vico Stückelberg's catalogue raisonné, 1933), to which the commission also suggested changes; the picture was completed in 1885 and presented in an atelier exhibition in 1886 (cf. Gessler 1904, pp. 119–120). The picture shows the building ruins at Münsterplatz; in the background, the St.
