About this work
In 1862/63, Courbet painted the large-scale canvas "Le retour de la conférence," depicting the return of drunk priests from a meeting. The anti-clerical subject provoked a scandal. The commission of the Paris Salon considered it provocative and rejected its inclusion in the 1863 exhibition. Courbet eventually showed the painting in his Paris studio, causing a great sensation.
