About this work

Israels knew Paris well and lived there for many years. This family picnic in the Bois de Boulogne, probably on a Sunday or public holiday, is typical of Israels' subject matter. He was not inclined to gloominess and in Paris painted primarily urban pastimes, in particular those of women: parks, fashion houses, restaurants and cafés.
