About this work
In 1530, Hans Holbein the Younger was commissioned to paint the south wall of the Basel Great Council Chamber, which had remained empty until then, receiving either 75 or even 90 pounds for it; payments ran from June 6 to November 18 (see Sander 2005). Two scenes from the Old Testament were chosen as themes: Samuel cursing Saul (1 Samuel 15, 16–30) and Rehoboam's arrogance (1 Kings 12,1–19).
