About this work
In 1937, the painting was confiscated as "degenerate" from the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and sold in 1939 by the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda in Berlin to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On the back of the canvas, the artist Bernhard Hoetger, who temporarily owned the painting, confirmed its authenticity. Inspired by Modersohn-Becker's work, Hoetger moved to Worpswede in 1914, after having already maintained studios in nearby Fischerhude since 1913.
