"The immense power of these mountain forms makes one clearly aware of one's own smallness." The tiny figure of the Alphorn-playing shepherd underscores the overwhelming size and power of nature described by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in 1918 – an effect he further intensified by choosing the picture format. When the art commission debated the purchase of the painting in 1944, one argument was that it was the most worthy complement to the Kirchner... which had already entered the Basel collection in 1923.
