About this work
The painting was originally in the possession of the Museum Folkwang in Essen, where it was confiscated by the Nazis in 1937 and shown at the defamatory "Degenerate Art" exhibition in Munich. Through the mediation of the book and art dealership Karl Buchholz in Berlin, it could be purchased by the Kunstmuseum Basel in 1939. In the Kupferstichkabinett of the museum, there is also a first pencil sketch for the painting (Inv. No. 1953.139), which Schlemmer titled "Roman".
