About this work
A baguette, a violin, and a fish lie lined up on a wooden table with turned legs. The table, given in extreme bird's-eye view, pierces the lower image boundary. This obstructs the view into depth and gives the image a flat character. Developing from the conventional starting situation of a still life, Soutine creates a dynamic drama of falling and tumbling: the table, violin, bread, and fish seem to have been captured by a rushing current.
