About this work
Auguste de Niederhäusern, also known as Rodo, portrayed the French poet Paul Verlaine (1844–1896) in several marble busts and medals before receiving the commission in 1895 to create a monument for Verlaine, which was finally unveiled in 1911 in the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris. Recent research suggests that the Basel bust is his third version (Lapaire 2001, pp. 258–259). On the relief base, S are inscribed on the three front sides.
