About this work

The bust is a version of the Poet's Head based on a design for the "Monument à Victor Hugo", which Auguste Rodin was supposed to execute as a commissioned work for the Panthéon in Paris. The bronze cast in Basel goes back to the second heroic bust version from 1902, of which Alexis Rudier produced a total of eight bronze casts before 1914 (Le Normand-Romain/Marraud/Tytgat 2007, p. 439). Further casts followed later.
