About this work
In the summer of 1879, Ferdinand Hodler moved to Geneva and lived in the attic of the pension at the "Café du Cendrier," rue du Cendrier 15, run by Françoise Raimondet. The painting depicts the interior of the tavern. On the entire reverse side of the canvas is a vertical oil sketch of a river landscape with a bridge under a high sky.
