About this work
The earlier attribution of the painting to Pieter Lastman had already been rejected by Astrid Tümpel in 1981 (written communication of February 15, 1981, in the painting file). Gregory Martin confirmed the deletion in 1985 and assigned the painting to Simon de Vos. He compares it with two depictions of the Continence of Scipio also attributed to de Vos by him, in Weston Park (collection of the Earl of Bradford) and the Resurrection of Lazarus in the National Gallery in London.
