About this work
The author of the large-format Adoration belongs to the circle designated by Friedländer as Antwerp Mannerists. Certain compositional elements reappear repeatedly in panel painting in Antwerp from the first three decades of the 16th century. Thus, for example, the poses of the king entering dynamically from the left and the black man standing on the right, which can also be found with the Master of the von Grooteschen Adoration, but in the Basel panel receive greater corporeality (cf. e.g.
