About this work
On the steps of the tomb, two shepherds can be seen, who apparently decipher an inscription there—a reference to Nicolas Poussin's painting "Et in Arcadia ego" (first version in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth, or second version in the Louvre, Paris), which shows shepherds reading an inscription on a sarcophagus.
