About this work
Balthasar Denner is primarily known as a portrait painter. He painted mostly bust-length portraits. In his later works, he concentrated especially on the depiction of facial expression. In the case of old people, he reproduced every wrinkle of the skin with the utmost precision, as with the woman depicted here.
