About this work

Hans Rispach (Riespach, b. 1526) married the 15-year-old Barbara Meyer zum Pfeil in 1550 (see our Inv. 390). Both died in May 1552, the year of creation of their portraits. The young man wears a golden medallion with impressed numbers around his neck, a so-called magic square, which was a popular talisman.
