About this work

The portrait, excellent in the rendering of the face but somewhat awkward in the formulation of the hands, was formerly considered a portrait of Jakob Jordaens by Peter Paul Rubens. The sitter, however, appears significantly older than 26 years (Jordaens' age in 1619), and for an attribution to Rubens, Inv. 515 lacks elegance. Theodor Frimmel thought of Geldorp Gortzius, active in Antwerp and Cologne, whose death is set in recent literature in 1616.
