About this work
The painting on copper was formerly considered a work of Adam Elsheimer, whose influence is obvious. The Venetian-born Saraceni must have seen paintings by Elsheimer in Rome in the early 1600s. He painted small-format pictures with biblical and mythological themes. The Basel painting shows the announcement of the birth of a son, namely Samson, to the wife of Manoah (Judges 13:3–5).
