About this work
The Basel collector and painter Emilie Linder (1797–1867) commissioned the painting from Bernhard von Neher in 1829 during her stay in Rome. On the occasion of the construction of the museum on Augustinergasse in Basel, which opened in 1849, she donated it to the Public Art Collection Basel. On an 1831-dated watercolor by Erwin Speckter depicting the shared studio of Speckter and Neher in Rome, Neher is shown working on the painting "The Angels at Abraham" (Private collection...).
