About this work
According to Bodo Beier ("Contre-Épreuves" in Baroque Still-Life Painting, in: Maltechnik/Restauro 93, 1987, pp. 35–39), Marseus van Schrieck was the inventor of a special painting technique (or at least its first verifiable user today), in which insects, moss, and lichens were pressed into paint that had only slightly dried, so that particles from the surfaces of the natural objects remained adhered, determining both color and structure at the respective location in the image.
