About this work
Goltzius is primarily known as a draftsman and copper engraver, for he did not begin painting until the year 1600, at the age of 42. The Basel painting is by far the largest work in his small painted oeuvre. At the same time, it is perhaps the most enigmatic. Numerous and contradictory interpretations have been offered for its composition. Thus, Christine Göttler (Exhibition Catalogue Düsseldorf 2014, p. 143) recently interpreted the complex relationships of the individual pictorial elements as an "Allegory of the Arts."
