About this work

The painting takes up Titian's composition "Venus with a Lute Player", created around 1565, in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (or New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art), but presents the main figures in mirror image. Isaacsz. turns Venus into an allegory of Vanitas by adding attributes such as soap-blowing putti and insignia of power and wealth as symbols of transience.
