About this work
The painting was probably completed by Arnold Böcklin in early winter 1847 in Geneva, where he lived from September 1847 to early January 1848. During a two-month illness, he was cared for there by the students and friends Paul Bourne and Eugène d'Andiran (also Dandiran). The latter received the painting as a thank-you. A design drawing, on which the seagulls and the front shore are still missing, is kept in the Print Room of the Kunstmuseum Basel (Inv. 1999.8; Holenweg/Zelger 199).
