About this work
Wolf's most radical glacier view not only dramatizes, as is typical for him, the silhouettes of high mountain ranges—particularly evident here in the elevation of the Finsteraarhorn—but also enhances the effect by introducing three tiny figures on the snow-covered ice, which clarify the scale between humans and the surrounding nature. This staffage is absent from the preparatory sketch (Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, Inv. 284; Exhibition Catalogue Basel 2014, no. 68), which also shows the mountains...
