About this work
The Battle of St. Jakob in 1444 counts among the important events in Swiss history. The painting depicts the struggle of the Confederates against a mercenary army fighting for King Frederick III, which was French, on the Birs near Basel. In the background, the village of St. Jakob and the towers of Basel are visible on the horizon. The oil painting was created in 1838 on commission from the collector Emilie Linder, who came from Basel and lived in Munich, but who did not pay the price demanded by the artist.
