About this work
After unsuccessful sanatorium stays in Germany, Kirchner sought recovery in the mountains and moved to Davos in 1918. With the expressive means developed before the war, he now devoted himself to depicting the surrounding mountains and the rhythm of simple peasant life at Frauenkirch. Stafelalp, Return of the Animals can be understood as the counterpart to the earlier completed in 1919 painting Alpaufzug (Kunstmuseum St. Gallen).
