About this work
In the summer of 1868, Buchser traveled to the areas around the Great Lakes (USA) and stayed for a longer period in August with the Chipowah Indians at Sault Ste. Marie, a sightseeing spot on the border with Canada. Many sketches were created, from which Buchser, back in Detroit, developed among other things this painting. See also with the same view from the Canadian side the pictures in the Kunstmuseum Basel (Inv. 1068, with setting sun and only one sitting figure of an Indian woman on the shore rec...).
